Trends and investment 2026

The year 2026 is a critical turning point for the SAP community: SAP's visions meet the reality of existing customers. As the end of maintenance for the old ERP system approaches in 2027, the pressure for S/4 migrations will increase massively and shape the market for service providers.

TO THE COVER STORY
SAP has opened a Defense Innovation Hub in Munich to reaffirm its long-term commitment to strengthening digital readiness as a central component of modern defense capabilities.
Many CIOs are pinning their hopes on the EU Data Act, which is explicitly aimed at breaking down lock-in effects and facilitating the change of cloud service providers, cloud exit and switching. What is SAP doing?
The discontinuation of SAP IS-H presents hospitals with a key strategic decision: How can patient billing be secured in the long term - on time, economically and without dependencies on SAP Basis technology?

The CCoE paradox

February 19, 2026
The belief that by signing a Rise-with-SAP contract, responsibility for SAP S/4 Hana operations is handed over to the Walldorf ERP group is one of the most dangerous errors in the current transformation and S/4 conversion.
The difference between AI for the manufacturing industry and for ERP may be small. But the fact is that the German industrial group Siemens has a strategy under CEO Roland Busch, while SAP boss Christian Klein is lost in numerous AI partnerships. Will Klein be rescued by Hana co-inventor Professor Zeier using ERP AI?
The SAP share price has been on a downward trajectory for around a year, and there is no end in sight. The Supervisory Board and the Executive Board are equally responsible for this development. For months, SAP CEO Christian Klein watched helplessly from the sidelines as the catastrophe approached. What now?

R/3 and ECC legacy

For decades, the Z namespace was the wild west of SAP development with unlimited possibilities. Abap developers transformed the rigid standard processes of R/3 and ECC 6.0 into tailor-made suits for the specialist departments.
For years, those who managed SAP change worked behind the scenes, unseen, unheard, but indispensable. Engineers below deck who kept the company's engines running while others steered.
The SAP share price has plummeted - relatively speaking. Last year, the share price was almost 280 euros, and financial analysts were even predicting values in excess of 300 euros. Now the share price is leaden at 170 euros. Where is SAP's crisis communication?
SAP has fallen out of time: It's not that S/4 is a bad ERP, but rather that SAP CEO Christian Klein overslept the social and technical change.

SAP News

The migration of SAP BW to the cloud harbors unexpected cost traps. Those who migrate 1:1 pay the bill later. The key to efficiency lies in transparency and automation: only those who really know their data landscape can migrate in a targeted manner and reduce their costs.
I have spent decades designing and supporting major digital and data-driven transformations. I have experienced: projects with measurable success and examples of how not to do it better.
A survey of SAP user groups from the DACH region, the USA, the UK and Japan was conducted in mid-2025. The SAP cloud strategy was driven to the wall by CEO Christian Klein. Hardly any customers know about BDC and the new SAP Business Suite.
SAP legacy systems can already benefit from AI today without the need for a complete migration to S/4 Hana or BTP.

Business Management

SAP's AI assistant Joule is designed to drive automation, but its potential has so far mainly been exploited by early birds. Six out of ten companies still have their hands full with the S/4 conversion. The management consultancy Horváth recommends targeted use in standardized processes.
Digital transformation is a reality in small and medium-sized enterprises, but it is often incomplete. According to Bitkom, 77 percent of companies have a digitalization strategy, but only 19 percent implement it consistently—mainly due to a lack of data sovereignty.
Cleaning specialist Kärcher is taking the opportunity presented by a change to its existing ECM solution to move its data archive to the cloud and prepare its structures and processes for the upcoming migration to SAP S/4 Hana.
As the deadline for migrating to S/4 in 2027 approaches, Precisely and ASUG highlight key obstacles hindering SAP modernization—from process complexity and data quality issues to mixed user interface environments.

IT Management

When SMEs scale up, they face a variety of challenges. At the technical and procedural level, increasing data volumes and growing requirements for compliance, data security, and ESG conformity necessitate a solid operational framework.

Why unit tests?

For most developers, „unit testing“ and „test-driven development“ have long been familiar terms. Nevertheless, for a variety of reasons, not many programmers actually use them in practice.
Why low-code and AI are currently business boosters for SAP and non-SAP users, and how low-code-supported AI applications support users in their everyday work—here is a compact overview of how both technologies fit together perfectly and orchestrate business together.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping supply chain planning at an unprecedented pace. Traditional, linear processes are giving way to data-driven strategies powered by advanced technologies and sophisticated platforms. Among these, SAP Integrated Business Planning (IBP) stands out as a foundational tool for enabling an agentic AI framework.

Economy

Although the German economy believes it is well equipped when it comes to digital sovereignty, the majority is still dependent on digital solutions from non-European providers. This is shown by the first „Digital Sovereignty Index“ compiled by SAP Gold Partner Adesso and the HRI.
The DACH region remains a dynamic field of innovation: start-ups continue to gain in strategic importance. This is shown by the Start-up and Innovation Monitor 2025 of the digital consulting, solutions and software company Valantic.

German CEOs rely on AI

AI as a top investment: 68 percent of German CEOs name AI as their top investment goal in the latest KPMG CEO Outlook. 80 percent plan to invest at least ten percent of their budget in artificial intelligence in the short term.
IDC forecasts: European spending on public cloud services will rise to 229 billion USD in 2025 and to 452 billion USD by 2029. Despite geopolitical uncertainties, the cloud remains the engine of digitalization—driven by AI, regulation, and the healthcare boom.
