Most business processes are not limited to SAP. Much sensitive data is exported by users to MS Office applications - a risk that is significantly underestimated.
Data that could previously be protected by SAP authorization concepts is now increasingly exported from secure SAP systems and redistributed via third-party applications such as MS Office. Anyone who wants to protect their data should think about new, data-centric security concepts and anchor them as a core process in operational IT operations.
With the new EU GDPR, data protection has become a matter for the boss. As of May 2018, violations of this regulation will no longer be punished with a maximum fine of 300,000 euros, but with up to 20 million euros or four percent of global sales, whichever is higher. This is making CFOs and CIOs sit up and take notice.
