Image Mode as a Game Changer for Linux

Image Mode takes a container-native approach to building, deploying and managing the Linux operating system. This new deployment option for the world's leading Linux platform, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, combines all aspects of IT management - from applications to the underlying operating system - in a single workflow using the same tools and techniques. Using Image Mode is straightforward. It can be used from data centers to public clouds on bare metal servers, virtual machines and edge devices.
Uncomplicated container approach
There are three main reasons for using Image Mode: simple deployment and administration, greater security and support for innovation. The basis for this is the use of container-based tools and concepts. One advantage of containers is that container images are easier to use than other image formats and can be created more quickly. Con-tainer files offer a straightforward approach to defining the content and build instructions for an image. Container-based images therefore enable the creation of standardized operating system images with kernel, boot loader and drivers. For companies, this eliminates the need for manual installations and configurations, which would entail considerable effort for larger roll-outs. The centralized approach with a master image also simplifies administration and maintenance in the long term, as companies do not have to install individual updates or patches for each system. Overall, Image Mode users can optimize their entire deployment processes by using the same tools for apps and operating systems. However, a key advantage of Image Mode relates in particular to security. In accordance with the concept of container technology, images remain unchanged after creation. Changes only occur with new image versions. This immutable Linux approach also comes into play with Image Mode, which means that the root file system is unchangeable and only accessible in read-only mode. With the exception of a few directories, the operating system cannot be changed. If new versions are available, an update to the updated image can be carried out.
Immutable concept
A return to the previous image status is also possible without any problems. This immutable concept significantly increases security and stability, as unintentional changes to the base system are ruled out. This means that the operating system is also more reliably protected against attackers. In addition, Image Mode allows companies to use container security tools directly, from scanning and validation to cryptography.
Integrated AI workflows
Image Mode scores highly when it comes to innovation. Companies across industries are planning for a future in which AI workloads are integrated. Image Mode supports the path from idea to productive use thanks to its flexibility and close integration with the Podman Desktop AI Lab extension, enabling developers to deploy intelligent applications more quickly. Image Mode is therefore a key innovation in the classic Linux environment. This will benefit companies that want or need to protect critical systems and data more comprehensively. It affects development and testing systems in banks or insurance companies as well as modernization and migration scenarios in the SAP environment. The trend towards the use of image mode will therefore become increasingly important across all industries, certainly also in the SAP world. We are looking forward to the future with excitement.
