Online audio and podcasts continue to grow
Advertising revenue in the online audio sector rose to around EUR 70 million in 2020, as forecast by the German Digital Industry Association (BVDW). In 2019, revenue was still at 63 million euros.
In the podcast segment, advertising revenue was even higher than expected: Instead of the forecast EUR 14 million, revenue in the podcast segment amounted to around EUR 16 million. The pandemic-related lockdown phase has changed media usage behavior, which is benefiting the podcast sector in particular.
There are more professionally produced environments and increased use. The BVDW expects this trend to continue in 2021 despite the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. A total turnover of 78 million euros is expected for the online audio sector. Of this, 20 million euros in revenue is attributed to podcasts, which corresponds to an increase of around 25%.
