Shortfacts - June 2021

Avast has investigated how the use of spyware and stalkerware apps in Germany has changed since the start of the pandemic and the associated lockdown. The security experts found an increase of 108 percent in January and February 2021 compared to the same period in 2020.
Unethical software such as stalkerware allows a perpetrator to access their victim's personal photos, videos, emails, texts and app communications - without their knowledge or consent.
Stalkerware apps can also be used to eavesdrop on phone calls and secretly record conversations over the internet, as well as track their location. Alarmingly, the increase in stalkerware appears to be an echo of the rising number of cases of domestic violence across Germany.
