SAP's New AI Ethics Policy
The requirements for SAP's global AI ethics policy have undergone a significant transformation since the last revision in 2021. The policy originally applied only to a select group of SAP employees engaged in the development of AI-based solutions. The guideline has now been updated to align with these new requirements.
Alignment with Unesco
The updated SAP Global Ethics Policy for Artificial Intelligence (AI Ethics Policy) is aligned with the Unesco Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence. The policy now encompasses the domain of generative AI and applies to all employees, as well as select partner and third-party systems. The Unesco Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence represents the most comprehensive framework to date for the development and use of AI systems. The recommendation, which has been adopted by all 193 member states, contains ten principles designed to protect and strengthen human rights, human dignity, the environment, transparency, accountability, and compliance with the law.
SAP's AI Ethics Handbook translates the guidelines into concrete measures and processes for the development and implementation of AI systems that comply with the principle of human control and self-determination. In addition, the guidelines are fair, prevent discrimination, and ensure and promote sustainability and data protection. SAP's global AI ethics policy comprises ten guidelines on the ethical use of artificial intelligence.
Each of these guidelines is defined in the context of AI usage at SAP. Together with the recommendations of the external AI Ethics Advisory Panel and SAP's internal AI Ethics Council, as well as the AI Ethics Handbook, SAP's guidelines provide transparency regarding the company's approach to responsible AI solutions. "Generative AI has generated significant interest in the guideline," states Vikram Nagendra, Director of Sustainability at SAP. "It has now become a central element of our strategy across almost all business areas. Virtually all employees are involved with AI, either as developers or users."
