Over $4 trillion for IT

Increasingly, funding for new digital-business initiatives comes from departments outside of IT and is billed as cost of goods sold (COGS). "IT no longer merely supports the company's operations, as has traditionally been the case, but is fully involved in creating value for the company" says John-David Lovelock, Distinguished Research Vice President at Gartner.
"For one thing, this moves IT from a background role to the business front. For another, it shifts the source of funding from an overhead expense that is maintained, monitored and sometimes cut to what drives revenue."
