The SAP Clean Core approach forces customers to rigorously free the S/4 core from Abap modifications in order to facilitate future upgrades. Customizations should be outsourced to the Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP). From a critical point of view, this promise of salvation is an expensive constraint: it sometimes destroys competitively differentiating process knowledge and drives users into a vendor lock-in. However, it also leads S/4 back to the ERP standard, which can mean ERP agility.
