Concur integrates ISO 14083: Journey to Net Zero

Until now, different methods have led to room for interpretation and inconsistent data. The ISO 14083 standard was developed to standardize the calculation and reporting of emissions. It provides a uniform, globally recognized framework for calculating greenhouse gas emissions from all modes of transport - including air, rail, road and freight transport. It thus helps companies to obtain consistent and reliable data for their regulatory requirements.
This standard is also in line with climate initiatives such as the European Union's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). According to the CSRD, more than 50,000 companies worldwide will have to report their emissions from 2025. In addition, regulations adopted by the EU Parliament under the "CountEmissionsEU" will oblige transport providers to display emissions data directly at the point of sale. The recommendation contained therein to calculate emissions data in accordance with ISO 14083 underlines the importance of this standard.
ISO-14083-Integration
"Sustainability is a key success factor for companies," says Charlie Sultan, President Concur Travel at SAP Concur. "We are therefore the first online booking tool to integrate emissions calculations in accordance with the ISO 14083 standard. This not only enables our customers to make informed decisions, but also optimally prepares them for future regulatory requirements. We are very proud to be setting new standards in the field of sustainable business travel management through our partnership with Thrust Carbon."
Thrust Carbon and Concur Travel
Thanks to the collaboration with Thrust Carbon, customers can now view ISO 14083-certified emissions data in the new Concur Travel directly when booking their trip. This function not only provides reliable and globally recognized sustainability metrics, but also helps companies to adapt to new international standards at an early stage. This allows them to make sustainability decisions on a reliable basis.
Thrust Carbon is particularly thorough in its approach: The company uses various methods to calculate emissions as accurately as possible. Their current, improved ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) approach already takes into account real-life conditions such as closed airspace. In addition, they have developed a special ISO-compliant formula that exactly meets the requirements of ISO 14083. In this way, they ensure that the standardized requirements of the ISO standard are guaranteed, including uniform flight calculations.
"The travel industry is developing dynamically and we are working hard to shape this development in a sustainable way. With ISO 14083, our industry has a uniform and reliable standard for the first time. This helps us to minimize uncertainties, collect consistent data and focus together on the goal of net zero," says Kit Aspen, founder of Thrust Carbon. "We are all the more pleased to be working with SAP Concur, a leading provider in business travel management - together we can provide a large number of users with first-class data for sustainable travel."
Comply with CSRD requirements
With ISO 14083, companies can not only measure their emissions more accurately, but above all record them uniformly. This is particularly important if they have to comply with the strict CSRD requirements. Thrust Carbon supports SAP Concur customers in the new Concur Travel with a sophisticated reporting system. It ensures that the emissions data that customers see in the booking process matches the data in the official reports. This makes it much easier for companies to create reports and adjust their sustainability strategy based on reliable data.
The current Sustainability Benchmark 2024 by the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) shows how urgently companies need to take action on climate protection. The study monitors the extent to which companies are reducing their business travel emissions. The result: on a scale of 0 (no measures) to 5 (leading implementation), the average sustainability maturity level of the 241 organizations assessed was only 1.3. Standards such as ISO 14083 create the necessary basis here and show companies how they can shape the path to greater sustainability.
With SAP Concur, Concur Travel customers can now pursue their goals with confidence in the quality of emissions data and reduce the footprint of their business travel.
