Book tips - Annual reports
Annual Reports
At the end of January, SAP proudly presented its financial figures for the full year 2016. As in the previous year, the big showdown took place on the premises of the New York Stock Exchange. It is legitimate that such events are always used for self-promotion. In CEO Bill McDermott, SAP has the right man to make the seemingly dry series of figures easily digestible with the necessary entertainment qualities. But what is actually behind the show and the figures? In this issue, we introduce you to books that give even non-experts the tools they need to decode the quarterly figures, which some find cryptic. You will also find tips on how to make your investor relations successful: from the graphic presentation of annual reports to the opportunities offered by big data methods to generate more transparency.
" On the stock market, 2 times 2 is never 4, but 5 minus 1. You just have to have the nerve to withstand the minus 1. " -Andre Kostolany

Practical examples round off the book.
Annual Reports
This book provides an immediate insight into the extent of the widespread deficiencies in annual reports. The author presents a grid of eleven decision categories that can be used to easily check the completeness of statements in the foreword of annual reports. The reader is enabled to differentiate between irrelevant information that inflates the annual report and statements that are actually substantial.
Painting by numbers
In the visual language of an annual report - the leading medium of corporate communication - narrative illustration seems to play a subordinate role. The first part discusses the situation of illustration in annual reports in general; the second part analyzes and evaluates the quality of narrative illustration. The conclusion summarizes the results of the work and calls for more courage and a more conscious use of illustration in corporate communication.
