Social commitment
Over 430,000 young people in 30 countries in Africa and four countries in the Middle East took part in SAP's Africa Code Week (ACW) and Refugee Code Week 2016. With these two initiatives, SAP aims to provide young people with the skills they need to succeed in the digital economy.
The goal for Africa is to train more than 20,000 teachers and equip more than five million young people with basic programming skills by 2025.
In the long term, this will help to alleviate the shortage of skilled workers in the ICT (information technology and telecommunications) sector in the region, which in turn is a critical success factor for economic growth and peace.
The main partners include the Cape Town Science Center and the Galway Education Centre. Strategic partners are Unesco, Google and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Beyond Refugee Code Week, hundreds of teachers, parents and educators are offering online courses to continue the training in communities and at universities. This extends the reach of the initiative and provides access to digital skills for young people in host countries.
