The most popular German passwords 2021
Christoph Meinel, Director of the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI), comments: "Security researchers at the Hasso Plattner Institute have never recorded so many leaks from German websites as in 2021. At the same time, digital identity theft has risen again. Even though there is no 100 percent protection against attacks on the Internet, it is essential to protect personal data as best as possible. This includes choosing long individual and complex passwords and regularly checking whether personal data is affected." For many years, the Hasso Plattner Institute has been warning about the risks of weak and insecure passwords in order to raise public awareness of the high value of personal data and to increase its security.
Since 2014, it has been offering the Identity Leak Checker, a free online service that anyone can use to easily check whether personal data related to their e-mail address is circulating on the Internet. The Identity Leak Checker also forms the data basis for the most frequently used passwords of Germans, which the HPI publishes regularly. This year, 1.8 million access data from the HPI Identity Leak Checker dataset were evaluated for this purpose.
