Shortly after the election of the new U.S. president in November 2016, Snowden warned in a video message against seeing Donald Trump as the sole threat to privacy.
Snowden said:
"Trump's election is a dark moment in our nation's history, but it is not the end of history."
State surveillance of the Internet is a global danger. Snowden had worked as a technical expert and system administrator for the American intelligence services CIA and NSA, among others, and turned to investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald in spring 2013 with extensive material.
Snowden has been living in Russian exile since mid-2013.
