OS Infrastructure: Monitoring and Administration for Hana
IT operations without the use of appropriate system management tools are simply a no-go. System management software is provided for classic SAP landscapes with any DBs as well as in Hana environments - regardless of whether they are on-premise, in the cloud or in mixed operating forms.
And for a wide variety of purposes, both from SAP and from SAP partners. If we focus exclusively on Hana, Hana Studio also plays an important role in terms of system management.
However, SAP does not see this element in isolation, but in conjunction or in interaction with SAP Solution Manager and SAP LVM (Landscape and Virtualization Manager).
This means that a wide range of system management tasks and topics can be covered in terms of end-to-end management. The DBA Cockpit for Hana can be called up directly in the Solution Manager, for example.
All relevant information comes from Hana Studio. When it comes to BI monitoring, for example, all BI application processes (on the Hana basis) can be controlled and monitored directly in SAP Solution Manager, from data load to data presentation.
Also system management information of the technical systems (Abap and Java, application server, databases or servers).
Deep insights into the infrastructure
For Hana Linux platform management, Suse provides the system management software Suse Manager, which is based on the open source project Spacewalk. The system management software includes functions for seamless interaction with SAP's system management tools.
On the one hand, Suse Manager significantly reduces the complexity of Hana environments because all components and elements of a Hana server infrastructure can be administered and managed from a central location and on the basis of a sophisticated user interface.
On the other hand, individual environments required for enterprise operation (e.g. for development, test, integration and production systems) can be managed with pinpoint accuracy.
Furthermore, Suse Manager can be used to implement compliance requirements in a simplified manner or to realize compliance and proof of compliance. Suse Manager also stands for achieving cost benefits, in particular through the fact that manual and recurring tasks are automated.
Management is possible across all Hana systems (Intel X86 and IBM Power8-based Hana systems), across all hypervisors and also in mixed environments (native and virtualized).
Of course, Suse Manager can automatically take an inventory of the operating system platform with hardware and software information.
Software patch statuses (including Hana) are also recorded. And: configuration changes are recognized automatically. Likewise, configurations can be changed or reset to a defined state in the past via Suse Manager.
Close integration with SLES for SAP Applications
Suse Manager and Suse Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) are closely coordinated. Suse Manager is currently available in version 2.1, together with SLES for SAP Applications 11 and in the future with version 12, recently announced at Sapphire 2015 in Orlando.
A Suse Manager installation consists of at least one Suse Manager server and the Suse Manager lifecycle management entitlement for each managed system with an active Suse Linux Enterprise Subscription. A 1-year or 3-year entitlement includes priority support.
Conclusion:
Monitoring, administration and management of Hana systems (based on Linux) from the perspective of data center readiness are based on powerful tools that provide a high degree of automation - including the Suse Manager.
