Due to <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-1ck3cwbkdb2bawyclp0ik8zi2fdox45n\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Oracle<\/span>'s termination of the agreement, SAP cannot provide Oracle <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-o3bfa4xs2ubr5rndpmo9a5jtr5oqua9l\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">JDK<\/span> support coverage starting from January 2014. SAP has built a <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-crphrdpgkt8nuizu19ql0bccz89uo6e7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">JDK<\/span>called SAP <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-6qgirqwg52c1mh8jntds935x94qkyodc\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">JVM<\/span>. For example, SAP <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-hqj9yoey1ja6frqeas9quaoena9vum03\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">JVM<\/span> has been used by SAP NetWeaver for years; especially several thousand SAP NetWeaver 7.0 and 2004 Web AS Java systems have been migrated successfully to SAP <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-b95t2fvjkaq8c62mnlj6ssrlwqcvb2km\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">JVM<\/span> since 2011.\" (Source: <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-lthivu970hlmrulxjl5f7hmb58kdmjeu\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">SAP<\/span> Note 1920326)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Is this a technical necessity, malice, or declaration of war?<\/p><div id=\"great-3614339844\" class=\"great-fullsize-content-en\" style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6ZGXMPyM-nU\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"banner_26-04_29_800x100\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/e3mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/banner_26-04_29_800x100.jpg\" alt=\"\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/e3mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/banner_26-04_29_800x100.jpg 800w, https:\/\/e3mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/banner_26-04_29_800x100-400x50.jpg 400w, https:\/\/e3mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/banner_26-04_29_800x100-768x96.jpg 768w, https:\/\/e3mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/banner_26-04_29_800x100-100x13.jpg 100w, https:\/\/e3mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/banner_26-04_29_800x100-480x60.jpg 480w, https:\/\/e3mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/banner_26-04_29_800x100-640x80.jpg 640w, https:\/\/e3mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/banner_26-04_29_800x100-720x90.jpg 720w, https:\/\/e3mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/banner_26-04_29_800x100-18x2.jpg 18w, https:\/\/e3mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/banner_26-04_29_800x100-600x75.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" width=\"800\" height=\"100\"  style=\" max-width: 100%; height: auto;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The fact is that <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-k7u0521dodsw366tma9k3s21q7b8x9wy\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Oracle<\/span> presented a counter-design to SAP Hana at its own in-house exhibition a few weeks ago in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>Whether the in-memory computing of Larry <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-se3y23i0417lqjjoese8hudzyvhlm7vt\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\">Ellison<\/span> is good enough, my employees cannot yet answer.<\/p>\n<p>The fact is, however, that <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-a3afhwcxakns8oe91eu2yu547vwb2d89\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Oracles<\/span> The new in-memory DB takes the same approach as IBM DB2 Blu: you flange something to the existing DB. <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-4i8ocfz5b3xupsszc0jl9p8poyix8qou\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Database<\/span> and if you're lucky, everything moves a little faster now.<\/p>\n<h3>Blu again free of charge<\/h3>\n<p>For SAP-<span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-vrsem80003ep5y0zjc9csqhr1zrhtphb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">DB2<\/span>-As always, the Blu option is also available free of charge to existing customers.<\/p>\n<p>As in the past, the aim is to <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-zypu3g58glr3lkn0pyvxeg97m3ykxnqo\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">SAP<\/span>-Business Suite users benefit at no additional cost.<\/p>\n<p>At least that is what SAP and IBM have agreed on in a contract. Quasi at the last second, however, Vishal's <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-2c2j9fw61qu0p6bh66l76pq2v3qk6sp9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span>-troop recognized the danger and vetoed it.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-np6pkq6ldpu54inkcs98sxeze6ihom2k\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span> sells sluggishly and now comes <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-wdy6yp5w542xpr4nnxvorqv2yieotwy4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">IBM<\/span> with the free update DB2 Blu.<\/p>\n<p>My team has Blu customized on a test server: <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-vr5idjpdu7tlzai5f3b0jz7nillzyh1b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">IBM<\/span> has with <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-0becrd4af493p945otsdmcl8heesnmnb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">SAP<\/span> in the past two years, the in-memory computing component of <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-l3vfe2icgoagmgbubmm6iroi0q6ijdy1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">DB2<\/span> completed.<\/p>\n<p>The operational premiere and release were as <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-ifgc73o2y7dndonfr7ps5t7vspjshewd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">IBM<\/span>-Event planned at the <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-cdko7jjfq56uzxj63w0hlcbdjmrvzgkw\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">SAP<\/span> TechEd 2013 Amsterdam in early November.<\/p>\n<p>But <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-pvit9koqbe6qz4kr6yik1m4z1ubjjmxx\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">SAP<\/span> refuses to release. Thus, any existing customer can use the <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-rv6jlofc2320fop2o2uqzwoc5i88cdap\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">DB2<\/span>-Blu version, but may not use it in a production system.<\/p>\n<p>A deadlock, the computer scientist would say.<\/p>\n<p>Not quite, because there are valid contracts between IBM and SAP, so Vishal's Hana squad can only play for time.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, this state of affairs is very annoying and does not bring any reputation to either side.<\/p>\n<p>\"When two quarrel, a third rejoices,\" says my wife, who has found my notes for the E-3 column and comes into my study.<\/p>\n<p>Theoretically Larry <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-2swnxgyd2twjd6b8ywnrrkm95o0dgyag\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\">Ellison<\/span>but it is more complicated.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-8qmb02590w5ffami3ftifgr6m3vv8ywr\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span> is not yet a mature <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-9r2idhxvvs5x05c5jkb3fftcf2oqmyai\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Database<\/span>. But it can do some spectacular feats. Thus, the combination of Business Suite, BW, <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-9cw48am3hbzolrook4q8x3v6ude4y7ri\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-b3q34t7ozkeyz02qa4a87ai1fz1vmsz6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">DB2<\/span> Blu a variant.<\/p>\n<p>\"There you go, there's the solution,\" my wife is pleased and wants to go for another evening walk. \"Wait,\" I say, because that was only one possible, technical approach.<\/p>\n<p>What about the strategic dimension? Hasso and Vishal have worked with <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-hj9ls11gjj6ulkpt4tlrdw1breh20fxh\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span> made a claim to omnipotence: <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-srzl3nmnyes7ifvnny0mscmkjea5yk6b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span> is to be both an on-premise platform and a cloud solution, both <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-p2t8zvgzqjc7zbp7qizjagbf0gshgt7r\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">OLAP<\/span> as well as OLPT can.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately wants <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-a24htnx29ngvoe26t1jcy4wwikwss3q4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">SAP<\/span> not only the application level, but also the middleware (NetWeaver and SolMan) and the <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-1j5zzsdch97vqbegaes9mr29jtcxaiwp\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Database<\/span> (<span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-oscgu7pzajkbwh7dtiu0touwgj8odggd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span>) control.<\/p>\n<p>The operating system level is left to Suse Linux. And there is nothing to be earned with hardware anyway, see Sun.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-q1xvk08p5bq07w81ldheol8k18x3kyfc\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span>-Hardware<\/h3>\n<p>My anonymous e-mail acquaintance Michael Missbach sent me to <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-fquu2v8a8z6j3itaghms64ae5wm11btn\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-place\">Walldorf<\/span> for the opening of the <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-gfxwbemo59g5uiv2xx15jamqe7e5xlb8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Cisco<\/span>-<span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-q3h3rxeyvsynsubnkp4ckkmp631uev3s\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">SAP<\/span>-Competence Center.<\/p>\n<p>An important event with exciting discussions: Who has the best hardware for <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-hs23vwo630nm6cybuyvwfld2a4vieqob\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span> has? Whether <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-8pprxuzqtwhrtwwfgkv3gcmozmou0gtu\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span> virtualized productively? Can there be a Hana Cloud?<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, I will be in Singapore on November 11 - I may send a substitute.<\/p>\n<p>On the flight anyway I will meet with <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-3i5mhkezi05nzf4bylxr9yu1536tr837\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span> since I have been running Windows 8 on my notebook. <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-2kvp2tgkr9vsdj3gvncj9c9v1yvxbcp3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">VMware<\/span> Workstation with Linux and virtual <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-u4hrgj41j1dcyz0e9nhk2iyz5ka522qw\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span> and access them from Windows with <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-vvx17kabl9yqfta05toeihdzrdia2sll\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span> Studio access (<span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-w7vlaga37we9i8ysq2lfvm2pwmv657iv\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Intel<\/span> i7 with 16 GB memory).<\/p>\n<p>Hasso and Vishal have hoped to spend some time with <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-6bvskh7zggfnoy45zfwpmn9klbqdkqgm\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span> to have a unique selling proposition - now straddle <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-p4ij3xw08kj6dx4m61ztwd8fyxd3yyoe\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Oracle<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-ulkrronidglugvdaduqojexatcp5gavt\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">IBM<\/span> in.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time run the <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-t29j968pmsam3bn7vd09vav2lz735gcv\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span>-business is unsatisfactory. Existing customers are skeptical and follow the motto: Never change a running system!<\/p>\n<p>A colleague is with <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-1wi4n5veuzrf7b7jjqzowfnr8es2rsn5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span> failed. The former CIO at Yazaki Europe Limited in Cologne motivated by <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-ltvqvrvdmd45f89jend1e2jvhqxlhqf7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">SAP<\/span> promised that BW performance would increase significantly.<\/p>\n<p>All theory is gray. In practice brought <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-emuu0k8hk65rwnx206houyyht39e6rep\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span> a weak result.<\/p>\n<p>I had the incident described to me. My CIO colleague is really only guilty of one thing: he trusted Vishal Sikka's promises too much.<\/p>\n<p>There are fantastic success stories and applications with <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-1zlx7vi3q6y02o3ssilve7387k1931kp\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span>However, these are singular events in the wide <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-qjjkxqew428nkkof4skz7a10sbbfdwwo\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">ERP<\/span>-world. The fewest <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-77ih4w7jy5iy5oyvpdy08fsftxksdxrh\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span>-findings can be applied to other scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>Almost every <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-um6jmfy89h4n37i63en9avqjl6mxct3f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Hana<\/span>-project starts from scratch again: fails spectacularly or becomes a sensation.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The SAP community wellness strategy comes to an end.
