It marks a fundamental paradigm shift: away from a monolithic ERP system toward a modular, service-oriented architecture that enables innovation while ensuring stability. At the heart of this development lies a guiding principle that significantly shapes SAP\u2019s strategy: Clean Core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many SAP systems have evolved over the years\u2014often decades. Custom developments, modifications, and client-specific enhancements have resulted in highly customized but difficult-to-maintain system landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With its Clean Core strategy, SAP aims to ensure that its systems remain maintainable, upgradeable, and adaptable over the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With S\/4 Hana, SAP is pursuing a clear architectural approach:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The digital core remains close to the standard and stable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extensions are developed independently of the core<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Innovation is implemented outside the ERP system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two main expansion options: on-stack development or the use of the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On-Stack (ABAP Cloud) development is well-suited for process-oriented enhancements and innovations within the system. However, strict Clean Core guidelines apply here as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SAP Business Technology Platform, on the other hand, is particularly well-suited for side-by-side extensions and for innovative applications outside the core system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clean Core Architectural Principle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clean Core is not a marketing term, but a clearly defined architectural principle in which the SAP standard is not modified, extensions are implemented exclusively through approved interfaces\u2014known as APIs\u2014and developments are assigned to the respective architectural layers without overlap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For stable, system-integrated enhancements and innovations, technical implementation is carried out via APAB Cloud (on-stack), and for \u201eloosely coupled\u201c ones, via BTP (side-by-side).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal of this approach is to ensure upgradeability while simultaneously decoupling innovation cycles from it. This allows companies to take advantage of new releases and new developments without having to undertake time-consuming customization projects. In the traditional SAP model, enhancements were often implemented directly within the system (Z\/Y developments), sometimes deeply integrated into standard processes. Clean Core deliberately limits this model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, different principles apply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use of Published APIs and Extension Points<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Development using clearly defined models (ABAP Cloud, BTP)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preventing Unauthorized Access to SAP Objects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, practical implementation remains a key challenge, as not all of the required APIs and extension points are currently fully available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So what options are left?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First and foremost, of course, the use of certified add-ons (e.g., SAP Build Partner solutions), but it is also possible for partner solutions to develop missing APIs. These could then be incorporated into the SAP standard at a later date, if necessary. Alternatively, one can focus on interim solutions within the framework of permitted extension patterns. In this case as well, add-ons can play an important role, as they can fill functional gaps while being integrated in a way that complies with the Clean Core principle. This ensures the technical soundness of the transition phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cloud Vision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SAP is consistently driving the transformation toward SAP S\/4 HANA. In this context, the following operating models should be examined closely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On-prem (maximum flexibility, high level of autonomy)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Private Cloud (hosted environment with greater standardization)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Public Cloud (highest level of standardization, clear guidelines)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important to note that the public cloud, in particular, consistently implements the clean-core approach and appears to be best suited for carrying out this strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is because, in the public cloud, extensions are only possible through defined models. Modifications to the core are only permitted in compliance with the Clean Core Level A guidelines, and innovation cycles are also dictated by SAP. BTP plays a central role in this scenario. It serves as both an integration and extension platform and represents the innovation layer outside the ERP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, migrating business logic to external platforms isn't necessarily a sure thing. In the supply chain sector in particular, large volumes of data, real-time requirements, and complex interdependencies pose a real challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Supply Chain Caught Between a Rock and a Hard Place<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Above all, the Clean Core transformation poses major challenges for the transition of digital supply chain processes, as this is where high operational criticality, complex, company-specific processes, and large volumes of real-time data converge. At the same time, the transition to Clean Core also offers competitive advantages, because\u2014especially in areas where standard solutions fall short\u2014the performance and sophisticated logic required by Clean Core can make all the difference in supply chain efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key question for companies with highly customized characteristics and processes is therefore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can differentiation be maintained without violating the Clean Core principles?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer lies in a balanced architectural strategy. Of course, wherever differentiation is not necessary, the standard should be used. This helps avoid complexity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If extensions are necessary, they should be implemented in a targeted manner\u2014either as an on-stack solution OR as a side-by-side solution. Furthermore, core processes must be clearly separated from additional logic, and the solution\u2019s architecture should be carefully designed and thoroughly reviewed. Pursuing technical feasibility at any cost only leads to problems in practical operation and high costs for subsequent adjustments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using Certifications Strategically<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certifications can serve as important proof of quality and integration\u2014especially when using third-party add-ons. In such cases, they should be specifically requested, as they help ensure compliance with SAP standards and architectural requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, certification is not required for customer-specific developments within the Clean Core framework (e.g., ABAP Cloud On-Stack). The key factor here is the consistent implementation of the specified SAP architecture and extension guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus, therefore, is not on the certification itself, but on proper architectural integration. This includes adherence to the Clean Core principles, the use of approved extension models (APIs, ABAP Cloud, BTP), and, of course, strategic alignment with the SAP roadmap. Certifications can provide reassurance when evaluating add-on providers, as the complex programming cannot be assessed from the outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clean Core is far more than just a technical requirement from SAP. It is the architectural foundation for an ERP landscape that is both future-proof and manageable. In the supply chain in particular, it is clear that sustainable competitiveness does not result from maximum customization, but rather from an intelligent balance between standardization and targeted differentiation. Companies that consistently align their expansion strategy with Clean Core principles create the conditions to leverage innovations more quickly, reduce operating costs, and benefit from the SAP roadmap. The success of the S\/4 transformation is therefore determined not solely by the technology, but above all by the quality of the underlying architecture.
