In practice, however, it is becoming increasingly clear that this transformation does not necessarily have to take the form of a radical cloud migration. Instead, hybrid architectures, low-code platforms and AI-supported development are establishing themselves as a pragmatic way of combining modernization and stability.

Cloud-first-and-only strategy

A look at many SAP landscapes shows a similar picture: companies are under pressure to follow the cloud-first-and-only strategy and switch to SAP S/4 Hana and cloud operating models as quickly as possible.

At the same time, they are struggling with a continuous loop of challenges: These include legacy on-prem systems that remain business-critical, different cloud strategies (SaaS, S/4 Hana Cloud, hyperscaler services), clean-core requirements, data protection and geopatriation requirements, performance and latency issues and, of course, overburdened IT departments. The reality for many companies is therefore less a clear cloud world and more a hybrid transitional state.

The pragmatic third way

Between radical transformation and technological standstill, a third path is therefore opening up for many companies: controlled evolution. This approach pursues two central goals: Firstly, to continue operating the existing ERP core in a stable and predictable manner. Secondly, to implement innovation in a targeted manner where measurable added value is created.

In practice, this means that modernization takes place side-by-side, while the SAP core remains stable. New applications, integrations and automations are created outside the core system, but access it in a controlled manner. A platform such as Simplifier Platform takes on the role of an orchestration layer between SAP, cloud services and business applications.

From the platform to the digital team This approach becomes particularly interesting when low-code platforms are increasingly combined with AI support. Instead of individual tools, a kind of digital team is created that accelerates the implementation of innovation.

Put simply, the platform works like a coordinated agent system: a central orchestrator analyzes requirements and distributes tasks. Specialized functions create applications, integrate systems or automate processes, while automated tests continuously ensure quality and stability.

This division of labor is more reminiscent of a team of specialists than traditional software development. In practice, this means that specialist departments, IT and intelligent AI assistants work together on solutions.

Stable core, flexible innovation

The prerequisite for this approach is a stable ERP core. Here, companies often work with specialized partners who focus on operation, basis and infrastructure. The aim is a predictable and secure
Operation of the existing system - regardless of when a migration or transformation takes place. While the core is running stably, innovation can take place on a decoupled level. And this is precisely where Low-
Code platforms, for example with side-by-side extensions, modern user interfaces, mobile applications, integrations across system boundaries and process automation. The decisive advantage: the ERP core remains untouched.

Modern front ends

A particularly visible modernization effect can be seen in the user interfaces. Role-based applications in the style of modern Fiori interfaces often replace Excel spreadsheets, paper forms or manual coordination processes. Typical areas of application can be store floor applications, logistics processes, quality management, maintenance or approval workflows. Quick wins are often achieved here because improvements are immediately visible in the user's day-to-day work.

Citizen Development, Governance

Another important aspect is the collaboration between business departments and IT. Low-code platforms enable specialist departments to design applications themselves. At the same time, IT retains control over architecture, integration and security. In practice, this creates a new form of collaboration that reduces both IT backlogs and shadow IT: Business departments contribute their process knowledge, IT defines governance and standards, and the platform and AI support accelerate implementation.

Today, modernization rarely takes place exclusively within a single system. Many processes run across multiple applications - SAP, cloud services, specialized industry solutions or IoT platforms. The decisive factor is therefore less the individual system and more the orchestration across system boundaries. Low-code platforms play a central role here: they integrate SAP and non-SAP systems, allow process logic across multiple systems, transparent data flows and audit trails for governance and compliance.

Orchestration instead of infrastructure

Large cloud transformation projects often take years and are often more expensive than planned. A hybrid approach, on the other hand, allows a significantly faster time-to-value. New applications can be created as MVPs, existing systems remain usable and transformation takes place gradually. This also reduces the risk of major system changes. Today, the integration of hybrid IT landscapes is less of an infrastructure problem and more of an orchestration task. While many providers are primarily talking about cloud migration, many companies are asking a different question: how can existing systems be modernized without jeopardizing their stability? The answer often lies not in radical big-bang projects, but in controlled evolution: and it is precisely this that ensures stable operation of the ERP core, flexible innovation outside the core, integration across system boundaries and collaboration between specialist departments, IT and AI assistance.

Or to put it another way: It's not the quick route to the cloud that determines the success of digitalization - but the ability to intelligently develop existing systems.

Low-code, SAP and artificial intelligence

How low-code platforms allow SAP applications to be created faster and how AI supports this as an intelligent development assistant.

How does low-code work?

Low-code technologies are development platforms that can be used to create applications in the SAP environment with significantly reduced programming effort. Instead of complex coding, app development takes place visually - using drag-and-drop interfaces or model-based logic, for example.

What is the advantage in the SAP environment?

Standard functions are often not sufficient to fully map individual company or industry requirements. Low-code enables side-by-side extensions for SAP S/4 Hana without changing the ERP core.

What are the concrete benefits of low-code?

The benefits include faster prototyping, simplified testing and deployment and less dependence on traditional developer resources. With the appropriate training, specialist departments can create applications themselves, such as Fiori apps, approval workflows or forms for data collection.

How artificial intelligence complements these platforms?

AI does not replace development, but acts as an intelligent assistant. On the Simplifier Platform, artificial intelligence provides support in areas such as:

Workflow creation

App generation

Integration configuration

Test automation

The crucial point here is that the productive code continues to be created in a controlled manner within the platform. This ensures that governance, security and data flow remain transparent and controllable at all times - while artificial intelligence significantly accelerates implementation and efficiently supports developers and specialist departments.

Companies are faced with the challenge of combining stable SAP core systems with the
speed of modern development.
