This requires a package of measures consisting of tax relief for investments, targeted subsidies and a corresponding digital infrastructure, as well as a dialog with politicians.

Both BVDW and HDE are convinced that technological development at the point of sale and the active use of digital means can help revitalize German city centers and overcome the consequences of the pandemic standstill. BVDW and HDE believe that meaningful penetration of technological innovations relieves the burden on retailers, offers customers a shopping experience, and makes the city center more attractive as a location.

“We have to stop seeing online retail and brick-and-mortar retail as competitors.“ - Marco Junk, Managing Director, BVDW

Helm charts for Kubernetes

In cooperation with its strategic partner VNC, OwnCloud simplifies the automated deployment of containers in Kubernetes with new Helm Charts.

Helm Charts facilitate the quick and easy deployment of container-based applications and workloads in Kubernetes clusters. They are virtually ready-made recipe collections of configuration files in readable language that describe the necessary ingredients and the order in which they are used.

The DevOps team at VNC, together with OwnCloud, has now developed new Helm Charts for using the file sync and share platform for the VNClagoon communication and collaboration suite. VNClagoon users can now quickly use OwnCloud to deploy fault-tolerant clusters.

Of course, the Helm Charts are available to the entire community in an open source manner. In addition, OwnCloud and VNC are jointly responsible for maintenance and further development.

Avast at the next level

Avast unveils its new brand identity. As part of its strategic realignment, Avast has set itself the task of protecting the digital freedom of online citizens worldwide even more effectively. The company wants to strengthen rights in the digital space, especially in the important area of privacy. The new digital freedom initiative includes a commitment to user-friendly regulation, philanthropy and innovation. The visual design and tone of voice of Avast's new brand identity reflect the overarching objective. As part of its strategic realignment, Avast is launching Avast One, a new digital protection service.

OVK market figures

The Online Marketing Group (OVK) in the German Digital Economy Association (BVDW)
e. V. has published new market figures on the digital advertising industry. The OVK has raised its forecast significantly: The digital display advertising market is set to grow by 23.4% in Germany in 2021. This means that the digital display advertising market will surpass the five billion euro mark with 5.068 billion euros.

Online advertising recorded significant increases in advertising investments in almost all sectors. Growth rates are particularly high in the economic sectors that were heavily affected by the lockdown: Art, culture and entertainment, gastronomy, leisure and sport. However, fast-moving consumer goods such as beverages and personal care also recorded an increase.

High good

Freedom of information is a valuable asset. Especially in times of ever-growing data treasures, the question of how business, public administration and civil society can use data together to drive progress and innovation is becoming increasingly pressing. How the necessary access to data can be regulated is currently being explored in Europe.

As part of the International Day of Universal Access to Information introduced by Unesco, which has been celebrated annually on 28 September since 2016, the focus is now on the issues surrounding the implementation of corresponding projects. Data management plays a key role here, as Cloudera emphasizes.

"Digital services can profoundly change and improve environmental protection, agriculture, energy supply and transportation", explains Alexander Zschaler, Regional Sales Director DACH at Cloudera.

“It is important to create acceptance among those affected and to acquire competence in dealing with relevant information." - Alexander Zschaler, Regional Sales Director DACH, Cloudera

Fully managed service

Instaclustr has announced Apache Cassandra 4.0 as part of its Managed Platform. The managed services provider for open source technologies offers Cassandra as its primary NoSQL database solution alongside complementary solutions such as Apache Kafka, Open Distro for Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL and Redis. All data layer technologies that are part of Instaclustr's Managed Platform are available to users in their pure open source version.

Since solutions based on the open core principle come with high license costs and increase the risk of vendor lock-in, open source variants are more cost-friendly and flexible. The commitment to open source includes the entire Instaclustr tooling that is available for use with Cassandra, such as the LDAP authentication plug-in.

Companies can deploy Instaclustr Managed Cassandra 4.0 on Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and the Google Cloud Platform.

Strategic initiative

The Eclipse Foundation, Europe's largest open source organization, and the OpenAtom Foundation, China's first open source foundation, announce their intention to form a partnership focused on OpenAtom's OpenHarmony operating system (OS).

The common goal of this partnership is to build a worldwide, vendor-neutral and independent open source community that enables developers, vendors and system integrators to extend their global reach in a single and unified ecosystem. OpenHarmony is a distributed multi-kernel operating system that enables machines and connected objects to work together and share both software and hardware.

The goal of the collaboration will be to advance the development and distribution of OpenHarmony. To this end, the Eclipse Foundation will establish additional open source projects and a working group of interested parties to develop, deploy and promote an OpenHarmony-compatible implementation for the global market.

New integrations with ServiceNow

Puppet announced at the Puppetize Digital 2021 virtual conference that it has joined ServiceNow's Service Graph Connector program. Puppet's flagship product, Puppet Enterprise, is now integrated with Service Graph. The Service Graph Connector for Puppet integration helps ServiceNow customers quickly, easily and securely feed relevant and accurate data from Puppet-managed assets into ServiceNow's CMDB to make informed decisions across hybrid infrastructures.

Promoting sustainability

SAP has announced the availability of Product Footprint Management. The solution allows companies to calculate the carbon footprint of their products and across the entire value chain. It takes into account the complete product lifecycle and helps companies to disclose the environmental footprint of their products to regulators and make their products more sustainable. The solution is part of a new portfolio of sustainability-specific business applications.

Self-employed IT specialists

The turnover of the top ten providers for the recruitment, placement and management of IT freelancers fell by 6.5% in the coronavirus year 2020. This is the second year in a row that turnover has fallen (2019: 2.1%). For the current financial year, the personnel service providers for IT freelancers expect growth of 12%. Providers are also optimistic about the coming years: clients' IT spending is increasing and with it the demand for experts, who are already in limited supply.

Personnel service providers can meet the needs of companies quickly and flexibly by placing self-employed IT specialists. IT specialists with expertise in software development are particularly sought after. As in previous years, software development is at the top of the list. Specialists for cloud services are also in high demand.

“Many companies used the coronavirus crisis as an opportunity to modernize their processes and IT landscape.” - Lena Krumm, Junior Consultant, Lünendonk & Hossenfelder

No monthly SAP news should be disregarded.
